Sensuousness
is an integral part of Indians and India is the land where the infamous
Kamasutra, the ancient Hindu text describing human sexual behaviour. Mughal Art
is incomplete without depicting sensuousness. This picture portrays a couple in
a passionate position. Food and drinks have been laid out for the couple to
savour. while a lady in waiting is feeding a parrot a large green chilli, a
favourite of parrots. The parrot has a historic significance as there are
various tales revolving around a parrot. The ability of parrots to talk was
utilized very efficiently. The backdrop shows rock covered hills which is the
topography of Rajasthan. A palace like structure is also depicted behind the
hills. The gold dot designs around the motif highlights the picture. The
jewellery, waist bands, borders etc are also in gold. When the painting is
placed against the light, the yellow / gold lines reflect. Originally, they
were made using gold. This piece of art is designed on old documents which are
available for sale in the markets. These papers are either old Government
papers or leaves from old scriptures.
