Sensuousness
is an integral part of Indians and India is the land where the infamous
Kamasutra, the ancient Hindu text describing human sexual behaviour. Mughal Art
is incomplete without depicting sensuousness. This picture portrays a couple in
a passionate position. Food and drinks have been laid out for the couple to
savour. Fragrances or Ithar as known as in India are also placed near the
couple to soak in the aroma in erotic pleasure. The ladyÔÇÖs hands are
beautifully decorated with mehendi, made from dry leaves of the henna plant,a
traditional herb used to decorate a personÔÇÖs hands, legs or body. The jewellery, waist bands, borders etc are
also in gold. When the painting is placed against the light, the yellow / gold
lines reflect. Originally, they were made using gold. This piece of art is
designed on old documents which are available for sale in the markets. These
papers are either old Government papers or leaves from old scriptures. The
inscription at the back of the picture is Indo Islamic.
