The Goddess of art, music, learning, wisdom and knowledge is
Goddess Saraswati in the extreme left. She is part of the trinity of Goddess
Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati who are part of trinity of Lord Brahma the
Creator, Vishnu the Protector and Shiva the Destroyer. The meaning of Saraswati
is one who leads to essence of self knowledge. Saraswati is
invoked to remind the reader to meditate on virtue, virtuous emoluments, the
meaning and the very essence of one's activity, one's action. She is symbolized
with the counch in her right hand, playing the veena and verses in her left
hand. Her vehicle or mode of transport is the swan, standing at her feet.
In the center, is Goddess
Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity (both material and
spiritual). Her four hands represent the four goals of human life considered
important to the Hindu way of life ÔÇô dharma that signifies behaviour that are
considered to be in accordance with the universe, the order that makes life and
universe possible and
includes duties, rights, laws, conduct, virtues and ÔÇÿÔÇÿright way of livingÔÇÖÔÇÖ. Kama
means desire, wish, longing. It often connotes sexual desire and longing in
contemporary literature, but the concept more broadly refers to any desire,
wish, passion, longing, pleasure of the senses, the aesthetic enjoyment of
life, affection, or love, with or without sexual connotations. Artha literally
translates as ÔÇ£meaning, sense, goal, purpose or essenceÔÇØ depending on the
context. Artha is also a broader concept in the scriptures of Hinduism. As a
concept, it has multiple meanings, all of which imply ÔÇ£means of lifeÔÇØ,
activities and resources that enable one to be in a state one wants to be in.
Moksha refers to various forms of emancipation, liberation, and release. In its
soteriological and eschatological senses, it refers to freedom from worldly and
materialistic life, the cycle of death and rebirth.] In its epistemological and psychological
senses, moksha refers to freedom from ignorance: self-realization and
self-knowledge. Goddess LakshmiÔÇÖs mode of transport is the owl. She is often
seen on a lotus, either sitting or standing.
The extreme right is highly
reverenced Lord Ganesha, the second son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. His
head is that of an elephant and body of a human being. The God of
auspiciousness, Indians, start their work with a Shree Ganesh. He is known with
many names, Vinayaka, Ganapati, Lambodara etc. He is believed to be an obstacle
remover.
