Yashoda is Lord KrishnaÔÇÖs foster mother. According to scriptures, Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev in captivity. They were kept as prisoners by DevakiÔÇÖs brother, Kamsa, following a prophecy that KamsaÔÇÖs destroyer would be DevakiÔÇÖs child. Lord Krishna was the 8th child of Devaki and the time when he was born, the parents decided to take the child out on a stormy night and Vasudev carried Lord Krishna on his head to NandaÔÇÖa house. There Yashoda had delivered a baby girl, Yogmaya, who was exchanged with Lord Krishna. Yashoda was a selfless mother from whom Lord Krishna was the world. She loved him with all her heart, yet, never hesitated to punish him for his naughtiness. This art piece shows Yashoda holding Lord Krishna lovingly in her arms. Her eyes flow with love for the Lord. Balarama looks on and holds on to her. Balarama is Lord KrishnaÔÇÖs elder brother and is also referred as the eight avatar of VishnuÔÇÖs dashavatars. He is regarded as a deity of agriculture and fertility. Tales of the 2 brothers in bravery and nobility were wide spread and both the brothers stood for good causes. The picture depicts nightfall with the crescent moon and twinkling stars. Intricately designed borders have traditional indian motifs adorning and highlighting the picture.
