Hanuman also known as the Monkey
God, has a very powerful presence in the Hindu tradition. He is considered as a
very ardent devotee of Lord Rama, the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu, the
Creator of the universe. He was born to Anjana and Vayu, the Wind god. Hanuman
is a pivotal character in the Ramayan, an epic in Hinduism. He has been a
devoted servant of Le ord Rama, he gets the life saving herb, Sanjeevani, for
Lord RamaÔÇÖs brother, Laxman. He cannot identify the herb and he brings the
entire mountain to the battle field. He
is also said to have been a messenger of Lord Rama to his abducted wife, Devi
Sita, who is in Sri Lanka. He gives her the LordÔÇÖs ring as proof that he is
still alive. In this mission, he gets captured by the Lankan King, Ravana, who
orders that his tail is set ablaze. Hanuman causes havoc when he burns down Sri
Lanka with his tail and successfully returns to Lord Rama to bring him good
tidings about his beloved wife. There are many such tales about HanumanÔÇÖs
sincerity, devotion and wit. Here, he is painted Vermilion, holding the Gada or
Mace, which is primary weapon.
